An Ode to Blue – Face of the Day

IMG_3151

I love a good themed makeup. Now I’m not saying I go around matching everything all the time but I do think it’s fun for events! My BF and I were heading to a Tigers game and I wanted something just a little fun. The Tigers colors are blue and orange and since orange eyeshadow isn’t really my thing I busted out my blue liner that I so love!

I used three different products to create this bold blue liner.
First up – create what ever base you’d like to for this look. I went for a slightly contoured eye so I just threw a little taupe in my crease. Whatever taupe you have is fine.
Next, grab that blue liner! My favorite is Jane Iredale’s Midnight Blue. For my liner I like to keep it a little thicker on the outer edges and taper it in.
Now it’s time for eyeshadows! I love setting a pencil liner with a powder shadow. It really helps keep it in place all day. I used two shades of eyeshadow to get the color I was going for.
On top of the pencil liner I first placed Jane Iredale’s Blue Hour. It’s not my favorite blue shadow by any means. Fallout like crazy with this one! But it seemed to do the trick. This shade just added a little sparkle and set the liner.
That didn’t end up being quite the color I was going for so, I used one of my favorite blue/purple shadows to add a little more punch to the liner. I used Indigo from the Jane Artist Eyes II palette. I love this color. It’s stunning on it’s own but works well with a variety of liners.
Underneath my eye I used Cappuccino from Alima Pure to give slight definition but also warm up the look. Lastly just mascara, I used the Nvey Eco one that I’ve been really meaning to write a review for.

Hope you enjoyed this little pop of color. I think blues are great at transitioning from summer to fall. Check below for more photos and some swatches.

Green Beauty Skin Care Tag

There’s a new tag in the green beauty community.  And what kind of tag would an esthetician like myself be most geeked about? A skin care tag!
As you might imagine being an esthetician skin care is my job so I love this stuff. Today I’ll share with you some of my personal favorite tips, tricks and info.

Describe your skin care routine in 5 words
You know, surprisingly damn simple.

I am not a complicated girl when it comes to skin care. I tend to streamline my products so they are the most effective at what they do. I have a handful of go-to products that I use and I don’t switch it up a ton. My skin tends to be happiest this way.

IMG_3062

What’s your skin type?
In esthy terms I’m a Fitzpatrick 2. So I’m fair but with golden/neutral tones; prone to crisping up in the sun. I tend to be dry most of the year but have occasional bouts of “confused” skin. My major skin care concerns are fine lines, dark circles, occasional breakouts and keeping my skin nice and bright.

What’s your favorite skin care product?
I love masks. They can really make a lovely difference in your skin. Not to mention they give you a reason to take a few minutes for yourself. Two of my current favorites are the Antioxidant Mask from Kahina and Tata Harper’s Resurfacing mask. I’ve also got my eye on Osmia Organic’s Detox Mask and May Lindstrom’s Problem Solver.

Top blemish zapper?
After trying what feels like a ton of different spot treatments & serums over the years I think I finally found “the one“. For me, it’s the Spot Treatment by Osmia Organics. Nothing has worked as well as this little powerhouse does. It’s one of those miracle products that you can put on in the evening and wake up with the breakout having vanished. I will never be without it again.

Face wipes, yay or nay?
A very firm nay! I’ve really wanted to love these. They’d be great for my kids when I do theatrical makeup. But I’ve found them to be lacking. Too much scrubbing, too much stinging and way too many breakouts. No thank you I’ll skip ’em.

Toner, yay or nay?
Major YAY!!! Hydrating mists are a total essential to me. I use them before serums. I use them in facials. I use them to set makeup. (This is starting to sound a bit like Green Eggs & Ham) But I really do use them all the time. My favorite ones are rose water based but I like them all.

IMG_3180

High-end skin care or high-end makeup?
Skin care. I’d love to pick both but if I had to choose one over the other it’d be skin care.

What’s the most unusual skin care product you’ve tried?
Being in the skin care industry I’ve gotten the option to try a lot of different things over the years. I think one that stands out the most is one from esthetic school. It was a weird cinnamon-y gummy sticky thing that you painted all over your skin. You waited for it to turn the skin bright pink and tighten. If I remember right it was supposed to be anti-aging…

You’re in a pharmacy and can only pick up one item – what is it?
I’m going to assume that “pharmacy” means something like a CVS right? So in that case if I had to pick up one item it’d be a toss up between coconut oil and hair ties. I buy hair ties pretty much every other trip to the store since my cats steal them. If they had coconut oil though I might go for that as I can do a ton of skin care with that one jar.

Tell us your top skin care tips:

1. Do what makes you happy – I have found as an esthetician that people have the most beautiful radiance when they are genuinely happy.

2. Do some form of exercise – This ties in with the above. Cardiovascular exercise releases chemicals in the brain that make you happy and feel good. Not only that but it makes your skin glow! All that good circulation! My personal preferences are yoga, pilates and running.

3. Eat good fresh food – I try to eat plenty of fresh veggies and fruits. This gives your body the nutrition it needs to function properly. That’s not to say that I don’t indulge in the occasional cookie or piece of chocolate. Everything in moderation.

4. Sunscreen! – Everyone’s got a different opinion on this but for me sunscreen in a must. I figure if you’re going to drop some good money on skincare you mind as well protect your investment. I like looking for physical sunscreens that are non-nano like DeVita.

5. Be nice to your skin – As a fellow esthy I agree with Pam. Don’t scrub your face off. Over exfoliation just leads to problems. Exfoliate with care and treat your skin after.

Tada! That’s all there is folks. I really loved doing this tag. Thanks to my lovely esthetician friend Pam over at Pemberly Jones for tagging me.

I’m going to tag Katie ,  Cindy , Vivi and anyone else who’d like to join in on the fun!

Current Wishlist No.1

WishlistWednesday

These are a few lovely things I’ve been eyeing lately.

1. May Lindstrom – The Complete Skin Experience I know if I tried I could probably pair down to one or two things from May’s line that I really wanted. But the fact of it is that I kind of want everything. I love May’s attention to detail with her line. You can really tell the craftsmanship in that her products. Gorgeous packaging and effective product, I’m sold.

2. rms beauty – Lip Shine in Sacred I’ve been swooning over this color since it launched. A great juicy pink-red that looks amazing on everyone I’ve seen it on. As a lover of bright lips, this is totally up my alley.

3. Sheswai Lacquer – Hot Damn An amazing fuchsia color that I think will add a nice pop of color for the fall season. I think it will look incredible on both fingers and toes.

4. Kahina Giving Beauty – Brightening Serum This little gem is not only supposed to lighten pigmentation but brighten skin as well as fight fine lines! It’s as if someone answered my top skin care concerns with one bottle of magic. Who wouldn’t want that?

5. Osmia Organics – Light Body Oil I had a sample of this lovely oil that just made me swoon. I never knew my skin could be so hydrated! This is the body oil that got me on my recent kick and I’m really lusting after the full size of it.

Ilia Beauty Haul and First Impressions

I recently picked up 3 tinted lip conditioners and 1 lipstick from Ilia Beauty. Now in my defense 3 of them were limited edition. So I kind of needed them. I mean if I didn’t they’d disappear. I know, I know. These are the words of a lady who did not really need anymore lipsticks. But I love these colors enough that I’m thinking I’ll probably pitch a few things that I no longer wear. You know, like that beige gloss in the back of the draw that you keep because it looked good once (and only once).
Anyways, back to the new ones. I picked up Arabian Knights (does anyone else hear this song?), Crimson & Clover, In Paradise and Voila. Check out the video above for my thoughts on these lovely lipsticks.

August Goodebox

Here is my haul of goodies from the August Goodebox. For the most part I really enjoyed the travel goodies that came in this box. I was a little bummed about the Kaia wipes & the Primavera moisturizer but I think I’ll find good use for those. The Eat Green Tea though was the one oddball in the box and it just didn’t end up tasting good. I threw this into a smoothie the day after filming and it tasted like eating trees. Sticks and all. Not an experience I’m jumping to try again. I would have loved to have gotten the ginger that some other people did.
I love ginger!

Did you get something different than I did?? Share the details!! =)

Summer Body Moisturizers

IMG_2963

Moisturizing your limbs in the summertime can be somewhat daunting. Some moisturizers and oils are too light, some are too heavy. This trio of products I’ve found to be “just right” for summer. Moisturizing enough to take care of sun dried limbs but light enough that you don’t feel sticky or tacky throughout the day.

HollyBeth Organics Lemon Lime Shea Butter – This is a 3 ingredient wonder! Shea butter, lemon & lime. That’s it! The texture of this cream is unlike other shea butters I’ve tried. It’s a very smooth texture that sinks into skin nicely. The lemon lime scent is perfectly summer too! It’s definitely peaked my interest about other HolllyBeth products.
Osmia Organics Light Body Oil* – This oil is lovely. The scent is a little citrus, a little green. I like this one before bed as I find it very calming. The oil feels very nourishing on the skin but doesn’t leave a heavy film. My skin drinks it up! I’ve got my eye on a full size of it.
Lina Hanson Global Body Serum* – Serum is a great description of this product. It’s very light and easily absorbed. The scent is gorgeous! If there was a perfume of it I’d be layering these daily. It’s a beautiful blend of grapefruit and vanilla. This one is also on my wishlist!

Using the body oils has been amazing for my skin. I’m a total convert! Do you have any other body oil recommendations?

Au Naturale First Impressions

So recently I got some samples of foundation, bronzer and blush from Au Naturale to try out.
I thought a little video first impressions would be nice.
I tried the foundation in Sand, bronzer in Kissed* and blush in Pomegranate.
I really like the color match for the foundation. It’s a little warmer than my natural skin tone but blends well with the bit of sun I’ve gotten.
The bronzer I love and have been using pretty much everyday since I filmed this. It’s a smooth formula that can be built up to your liking.
The blush is very pretty as well and super pigmented. I’m still trying to work out exactly how much to use on my brush. One false move and it looks like I’m going to an 80’s party.

All in all I really liked what I tried.

Incase you were wondering I did start this video with my brows, eye makeup and concealer already done.
